Mercury 20 Gallery is pleased to present OPEN UP, a group exhibition in conjunction with East Bay Open Studios, which features fourteen artists from the gallery’s roster. Through painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and photography, this exhibition examines a range of images and ideas shared among the Mercury 20 community of artists. Freely associating, the works will join together to create a conversation about states of openness: the vulnerable, exposed, communicative, present, available, and accessible in our relationships with each other. ARTogether and Oakland Art Murmur are thrilled to extend an invitation to a conversation with a dynamic group of emerging artists of color who will be showcasing their work during the EBOS weekends. Join us for an insightful discussion with Kacy Jung, Houyee Chow, Sen Mendez, and Sunroop Kaur as they explore topics of identity, representation and healing, and discuss the impact of art on our communities, challenges and opportunities for emerging artists. This free event offers a unique opportunity to engage with the artists and other participants, ask questions, share thoughts, and network with fellow art enthusiasts.

ART OF SAN QUENTIN ART WALK

West End Arts District and ArtReach invite you to experience creative works from the incarcerated population on death row at San Quentin State Prison in California. The Art of San Quentin exhibit explores the healing and redemptive properties of artmaking. Experiencing the work of these accomplished and resourceful artists helps to break down stereotypes, and initiate dialogue about mass incarceration and capital punishment.

The guided art walk will take visitors along Webster Street to witness visual art, live performance, and film.

LEARN TO MAKE YOUR OWN PASTELS, 2PM, BERKELEY, FREE

Artist Todd Gilens will show you how to make pastels from dry pigments – or any colored powder. Todd wanted a non-toxic pastel for making large drawings, and wasn’t satisfied with the small size of commercially available sticks. In this demo, he will take you through his process of mixing and forming pastels, and share what he’s learned using earth pigments and binders.
