Goran Konjevod
I create sculptures by folding paper, using pleats to layer paper and generate curvature, lifting the flat sheet into the third dimension. Most of my work is abstract and relies equally on the geometric fold patterns, the organic three-dimensional forms created by the paper tension, and the interaction of the folds with encaustic paint, which I often use to add color to the paper before folding.
In addition to paper, I have worked with thin metal sheets and wire mesh (mostly copper and stainless steel), using a combination of techniques developed by paperfolders and metalsmiths. My background is in mathematics and computer science. I have worked as a professor (of computer science, at Arizona State University) and as a research scientist (at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory). I have used paperfolding as a tool to teach in various settings, including courses and workshops at Arizona State and Pratt Institute, because it is unique in bridging mathematics, engineering, art and science.
