Susan Brooks: Drawing on Metal/ Building with Clay/ Painting my Thoughts
I move freely between my mediums of non-traditional fine jewelry in sterling silver and gold, figurative layered paintings and drawings, and miniature ceramic/mixed media anthropomorphic sculpture called 1000 Objects of Desire and Mirth. I work mostly with the face and figure, decorative motifs, textures and color exploration. There is a strong visual crossover in all my work.
I come from an artistic bohemian background where art was pretty much the family business. I spent my youth in my father’s workshop in Manhattan where he was a sculptor, model and mold maker and a toy designer.
To this day I use hundred year old tools that belonged to my father and others before him. I went to Parsons School of Design where I studied illustration. I have been a working artist/artisan for most of my life. I have a studio/showroom in Berkeley CA in the historic Sawtooth Building where I have created a welcoming atmosphere which changes often.
Throughout the year guests can drop in every Thursday and the First Saturday of the month. Plus during East Bay Open Studios in May, and Berkeley Artisans Holiday Open Studios weekends in December, and for special events. Visits also by appointment.
